Bragging, Gluttony, Debates and Righteous Conduct
In an interesting aside, the sage says that those who live to brag continually are not fit to be sages (अण्वीभिस्तना पूतासः, 1.003.4.2).[1]
Gluttony and Debates In a verse full of pithy sayings he decries gluttony and empty debates, by posing choices:
समोहे वा य आशत नरस्तोकस्य सनितो | विप्रासो वा धियायवः || (1.008.6)[2]
(Choose): Debates or Union; one who lives for food alone gains an abject existence; (Choose) Be a sage! or be devoted to barley.
Thus, one who eats (glutton), is a man who has an abject existence (आशत नरस्तोकस्य).[3] One must choose between piety and gluttony he says: विप्रासो वा धियायवः,[4]
Another pithy saying is: समोहे वा य:[5] ; i.e., Debate or Yoga, implying that verbal disputation has to be foregone for practicing yoga, or that yoga is not a matter for verbal disputation, but presumably for direct experience.
Righteous Conduct In one verse, the sage advocates dedicating righteous behaviour as an offering to Indra, and defines such conduct:
उत ब्रुवन्तु नो निदो निरन्यतश्चिदारत | दधाना इन्द्र इद्दुवः || (1.004.5)[6]
And by calling oneself guardian (उत ब्रुवन्तु) (of one’s body), not censuring anyone (नो निदो), keeping aloof, attain to gentle intellect (निरन्यतश्चिदारत); Give this as an offering to Indra (दधाना इन्द्र इद्दुवः).
